Beware the AI Bear Trap: Japan's Battle Against Misinformation
In a country grappling with an unprecedented surge in bear attacks, a new threat has emerged: AI-generated bear videos. Experts are raising the alarm, urging caution amidst a deluge of fake footage that could distort public perception and endanger lives.
The recent rise in bear attacks has been alarming, with over 200 injuries and 13 fatalities in Japan this year alone. This has led to the deployment of military forces to tackle the issue. However, amidst this crisis, a different kind of danger is lurking online.
TikTok, a popular social media platform, has become a hotbed for these AI-generated videos. From an elderly woman bravely shooing away a bear from a nursery school to a fictional 'brown bear café', these videos have captured the attention of viewers, but not always for the right reasons.
But here's where it gets controversial: despite the presence of a Sora watermark, indicating OpenAI's involvement, viewers are still falling for these fakes. One video, posted by a childcare magazine publisher, racked up over 800,000 views in a month, with many users questioning its authenticity.
And this is the part most people miss: while bears have indeed attempted to enter schools and homes, analysts fear that these AI videos could influence public opinion, suggesting that wildlife is less dangerous than it truly is.
TikTok users are rightfully asking: "Is this real?" Another widely shared clip shows a brown bear jumping onto a moving car, while another depicts a bear attacking solar panels, leading to misleading interpretations about bear behavior.
Shinsuke Koike, an ecology professor, debunks the solar panel myth, stating there's no evidence to support it. He warns that such misconceptions can hinder effective bear management.
Social media platforms have faced criticism for their lack of action in detecting and flagging AI content. TikTok, in particular, has been under scrutiny, with its recent announcement of new tools to 'shape' and label AI content in feeds being seen as a step in the right direction.
The Japanese government has also issued warnings about AI-generated content, especially in the wake of the earthquake in northern Japan, where fake videos added to the chaos.
Some videos do carry 'AI-generated' labels or 'Sora' watermarks, but these can be easily removed, and even when present, many viewers fail to notice, leaving comments questioning the video's authenticity.
Isao Echizen, a generative AI expert, highlights the challenge: "Distinguishing real from fake is becoming more difficult... We must recognize that our social media feeds may not always present the truth."
