The atmosphere at the memorial was heavily secured, with areas cordoned off by armed riot police, some of whom had their faces obscured. A police patrol boat was also positioned offshore, a sight that many Australians are not accustomed to seeing during public gatherings.
Numerous mourners attended, many wearing kippahs (the traditional Jewish skullcap) and draping themselves in Australian flags.
