The brainchild of Mattawa's Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Sheri Wabie, 'Hockey Month in Mattawa' promises an unforgettable experience. Wabie's vision came to life this fall, and since then, she's been working tirelessly to ensure January is packed with more hockey than you can handle. From thrilling games to star-studded appearances, this month is all about celebrating the sport.
The action kicks off on January 10th with a public skate featuring members of the North Bay Battalion OHL team. This free event invites everyone to join the fun on the ice, offering a chance to meet the team and snap some photos. The event runs from 3:30 to 5 p.m., providing ample time for fans to interact with their hockey heroes.
On January 17th, get ready for a legendary showdown! The Legends Tour NHL Alumni, including Ron and Rich Sutter, Brian Strudland, John LeBlanc, and Bernie Nicholls, will face off against a team of local Mattawa players. This exciting game will take place at the Mike Rodden Arena, with the Legends Game starting at 7 p.m. and doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the Mattawa Information Centre or by calling Wabie.
But that's not all! Former NHL player Ted Nolan will grace Mattawa with his presence on January 21st. Nolan, a trailblazer for Indigenous players in the NHL, will deliver a captivating talk at the F.J. McElligott Secondary School.
