Polestar's Race to a Climate-Neutral Car: Challenges & Innovations by 2030 (2026)

Polestar, a major car brand, is making strides towards its ambitious goal of creating a truly climate-neutral vehicle by 2035, despite concerns about the upcoming ban on petrol and diesel cars. The company remains optimistic about its 2030 deadline to produce a revolutionary car with zero emissions at the tailpipe and throughout the manufacturing process. Polestar is collaborating with unique partners, such as SSAB, to produce steel with virtually zero carbon emissions using recycled materials and fossil-free energy. The Polestar 0 project, led by Hans Pehrson, is innovating and recasting materials to produce a vehicle without any greenhouse gas emissions. Polestar has already achieved a 24.7% reduction in emissions per vehicle sold compared to its base year and aims to produce an equivalent Polestar 2 with a 10-tonne lower carbon footprint by 2024. However, policy changes, like the European Union's decision to water down its pledge to ban petrol and diesel cars, are making the switch to zero-emission vehicles more challenging. The remaining 10% of emissions must be compensated through measures like low-carbon steel made in the UK, e-fuels, and biofuels. Fredrika Klarén, head of sustainability at Polestar, expressed concern about these policy changes, emphasizing the importance of focusing on production-related emissions. She highlighted the need to remove tailpipe emissions to align with production emissions reduction. As the industry waits for policymakers to set clearer requirements, Polestar remains committed to its goal, and the company's efforts are inspiring other manufacturers to take sustainability seriously. Environmental expert Matt Finch praised Polestar's dedication, noting that the project demonstrates a cleaner way to exist and drive, even though it's challenging. With the UK's commitment to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 and only sell zero-emission vehicles from 2035 onwards, supported by the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, Polestar's efforts are crucial in shaping a sustainable future for the automotive industry.
