Unity Leadership Changes: David Helgason Exits, Bernard Kim Joins (2026)

A significant shift is taking place at Unity, the renowned game engine company, as its former CEO and founder, David Helgason, steps down from the board of directors. Helgason's departure marks the end of an era, as he has been an integral part of Unity's journey for over two decades, alongside his co-founders, Nicholas Francis and Joachim Ante. Their vision to democratize game development has propelled Unity to become one of the most widely used game engines globally.

But here's where it gets controversial... Helgason's resignation from the CEO role in 2014 might have been a strategic move, as he remained on the board, continuing to influence the company's direction. Now, with his exit, the question arises: What does this mean for Unity's future?

In addition to Helgason, IronSource co-founder and former CEO, Tomer Bar-Zee, has also left the company. Both board members resigned on February 5th, 2026, leaving a void that will be filled by new faces.

Other notable departures include Mary Schmidt Campbell, whose term will expire at the 2026 annual stockholders' meeting, and Unity's chief accounting officer, Mark Barrysmith, who is set to retire in June 2026. These changes have reduced the full board to nine members.

Unity's current CEO, Matt Bromberg, expressed his gratitude for the departing board members, stating, "David and Tomer have been vital partners in Unity's growth and transformation. Their support and unique founder's vision have been invaluable."

Jim Whitehurst, Unity's chairman, also thanked the outgoing board members, acknowledging their contributions to the company's evolution.

And this is the part most people miss... Unity is welcoming a new independent director to its board: Bernard Kim, the former president of publishing at Zynga and CEO of Match Group. Kim will join the board and its nominating corporate governance committee, bringing his expertise in building and scaling global, public companies at the intersection of games and technology.

Whitehurst praised Kim, saying, "His leadership in mobile gaming, advertising technology, and consumer platforms will be a valuable asset to the Unity board."

Kim shared his excitement about joining Unity, stating, "I've long admired Unity's impact on the industry, and I'm eager to work with the Board and leadership team as we accelerate our mission to democratize game development."

So, what does this mean for Unity's future? With new leadership and a reduced board, will Unity continue its path of innovation and growth? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss the potential impact of these changes on the gaming industry!
