USC's D'Anton Lynn to Penn State? Lincoln Riley's Take on Coaching Rumors (2026)

Lincoln Riley has responded to speculation linking USC's defensive coordinator, D’Anton Lynn, with a potential position at Penn State, saying, "We’ll see how it plays out."

As the coaching carousel spins, the changes are not limited to head coaches alone; entire staffs are being reconfigured across the nation. This is particularly true for major programs like Penn State, where rumors are swirling about their interest in Lynn, who currently leads the defense for the Trojans.

For Lincoln Riley and USC, the primary goal is to keep Lynn on board. However, he acknowledges that the situation requires patience and a watchful approach.

"No, I don’t have an update," Riley commented during a recent press conference. "This time of year is always filled with these kinds of rumors, especially when you have a strong staff that is achieving positive results. It’s just part of the landscape. We’re aware of it, and we’ll see how things unfold."

The coaching dynamics at Penn State are undergoing significant changes this season, particularly after the midseason firing of James Franklin, who has since been succeeded by Matt Campbell. As Campbell aims to establish his own vision for the program, he will need to fill the void left by Jim Knowles. Should Lynn be chosen to step into this role, it could create considerable waves within the Big Ten conference.

D’Anton Lynn is regarded as a rising star in the coaching world; he played defensive back at Penn State between 2008 and 2011, which were the concluding years of the Joe Paterno era. He began his coaching career as an NFL assistant in 2014 before becoming the defensive coordinator first at UCLA in 2023 and later at USC.

"We’ve positioned ourselves well, and we’re excited about maintaining continuity while continuing our development," Riley explained. "However, we recognize that in any role, turnover can occur. These positions are highly sought after. The landscape of this job has changed dramatically compared to four years ago and even more so from two years ago. It reflects the current climate of college football, and while we hope to retain our staff, if changes are necessary, we will strive to uphold high standards and enhance our program."

Penn State has signalled its commitment to significantly investing in its assistant coaching staff, with reports indicating they plan to allocate $17 million to their salary pool. For context, Knowles was earning an annual salary of $3.1 million as the team’s defensive coordinator last season.

Despite the focus on Penn State, Riley's perspective on the situation remains unchanged. He sees this as a standard occurrence within the coaching industry.

"Not really," he stated when asked if the rumors affected his viewpoint. "These situations are what they are, and different institutions prioritize various aspects. I don’t judge that; I understand it. For example, last year, Penn State hired the defensive coordinator from the national champions. These developments happen frequently. D’Anton has done an excellent job here, and we’ll see how everything turns out."

As USC navigates these potential staff changes, the team is also gearing up for its upcoming bowl game. On December 30th, they will face TCU in the Alamo Bowl.
